Your first resin print does not need to be a leap into the unknown. With a safe workspace, a forgiving miniature, a prepared file, and a deliberate post-processing routine, you can go from opening the box to holding a crisp, paint-ready model in one repeatable workflow.

Resin 3D printing has a reputation for looking complicated. There is a printer to set up, liquid resin to handle, a model to orient, supports to create, and a printed part that still needs washing and curing. Seen all at once, that can feel like a lot. In practice, the process is a short chain of manageable decisions. Each step prepares the next one.

This guide walks through a complete first-print workflow using the HeyGears Reflex RS Turbo, Blueprint Studio, UltraCraft Wash, and UltraCraft Cure as the example system. The same safety principles apply to most resin printers, but device commands and material settings should always come from the documentation for your exact printer and resin.

Safety first: uncured resin should not touch your skin. Work in a ventilated area, wear nitrile gloves and eye protection, keep food and drinks away, protect the work surface, and follow the resin Safety Data Sheet. Do not pour resin, contaminated wash liquid, or resin-contaminated water down a drain.

1. Prepare the Workspace Before Opening Resin

A good first print starts before the printer is powered on. Choose a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight, pets, children, and food-preparation areas. Resin printers use UV-sensitive material, so bright sunlight can begin curing a spill or an open vat. Good ventilation is also important; follow the handling guidance supplied with your material.

Set up a clean side and a resin side. The clean side is for the computer, finished models, manuals, and unused tools. The resin side holds the printer, silicone mat, paper towels, scraper, resin bottle, and the path to your wash station. This simple separation reduces the chance of transferring uncured resin to door handles, keyboards, and other surfaces.

For a first miniature, have these items ready:

  • Nitrile gloves and safety glasses
  • A silicone work mat or other resin-resistant surface protection
  • Lint-free wipes or paper towels
  • A plastic scraper for the vat and the supplied part-removal tool
  • Flush cutters, tweezers, and a hobby knife for support cleanup
  • The wash liquid specified for your resin
  • A dedicated wash container or UltraCraft Wash
  • A post-curing unit such as UltraCraft Cure
  • A sealable container for contaminated waste

2. Unbox and Inspect the HeyGears RS Turbo

Remove the packaging in stages and keep it until the printer has completed a successful test. Place the HeyGears RS Turbo on the prepared surface, remove all transport protection, and inspect the build platform, resin tank, release film, screen area, cables, and accessories. The vat film should be clean and free of punctures, deep dents, or loose debris.

Do not improvise a leveling routine from instructions written for another printer. Those safeguards support a reliable process, but they do not replace a clean vat and a careful visual inspection.

Before adding resin, confirm that the build platform and resin tank are seated and secured exactly as the device interface or quick-start guide shows. A loose platform, incorrectly installed tank, or small cured fragment left on the film can ruin a print before the first layer is complete.

3. Choose a First Model That Teaches the Right Lessons

Your first model should be interesting enough to reveal detail, but not so fragile that every sword tip and fingertip becomes a failure point. A single 30–50 mm fantasy miniature with a compact pose is ideal. Look for a solid base, moderate overhangs, a sturdy weapon, and no enormous flat surfaces.

If the file is pre-supported by a trusted designer, make sure the supports were tested for your intended scale. If it is unsupported, use it as an opportunity to learn the assisted preparation tools in Blueprint Studio. Avoid filling the entire build plate on day one. One model uses less resin, finishes sooner, and makes troubleshooting easier.

4. Prepare the Model in Blueprint Studio

Import the STL or 3MF file into Blueprint Studio and select the exact printer, resin, tank configuration, and application profile you are using. This matters because exposure, motion, support behavior, washing, and curing are material-specific. A setting that works for one gray modeling resin may be unsuitable for a water-washable or engineering resin.

Start with model repair. Blueprint Studio can check common mesh problems such as holes, intersecting shells, and inverted normals. Next, review orientation. A miniature is usually tilted so that new cross-sections grow gradually and support contacts can be moved away from the face, chest, shield front, and other presentation surfaces.

Use intelligent auto-supports as a strong starting point, then inspect the result rather than accepting it blindly. Rotate the model and look underneath capes, elbows, weapon tips, feet, ornaments, and the base. Add support where a small island begins in mid-air, and move contacts away from delicate or highly visible detail when possible.

Preview the sliced layers before sending the job. Check that:

  • The model and supports stay within the printable area
  • Every isolated feature eventually connects to a supported structure
  • Large cross-sections do not appear suddenly without adequate support
  • Fine weapons, fingers, horns, and cloth edges are supported without being buried
  • The selected printer, resin, and layer profile are correct

Then slice and send the print job to the RS Turbo through the supported workflow, or transfer it as directed by the product documentation. For a first print, keep the recommended system profile rather than tuning exposure from forum recipes.

5. Load Resin and Start the Print

Put on gloves and eye protection. Gently mix the resin according to its instructions; avoid shaking so aggressively that you fill it with bubbles. Confirm that the vat is clean, then pour only the required amount while staying between the indicated minimum and maximum levels. Close the bottle immediately and wipe the outside if necessary.

Review the job on the printer, confirm the material and estimated build, and start. The HeyGears RS Turbo workflow combines printer, material, slicing, and monitoring as a system. Depending on the installed configuration, assisted functions such as automatic leveling, resin management, temperature control, and print monitoring can reduce setup friction. Optional hardware is required for some functions, so verify what is fitted to your machine.

During the early layers, stay nearby and watch for warnings, unusual sounds, or abnormal motion. Do not open the cover or reach into a moving printer. Once the job is stable, let the machine work. Repeatedly interrupting the process usually creates more risk than it removes.

6. Let the Finished Print Drain

When printing completes, leave the platform in its recommended drain position for a few minutes so excess resin returns to the vat. Wear fresh gloves before touching the platform. Keep the model over the protected resin side of the workspace and move slowly; a fast turn can fling droplets beyond the mat.

Inspect the build without touching it. A successful miniature should be fully present, attached to its supports, and free of obvious layer shifts or torn sections. If only the raft printed, or cured material remains in the vat, stop and follow the official failed-print cleanup procedure before starting another job. Never scrape the delicate vat film with a metal tool.

7. Wash the Miniature Thoroughly

Fresh prints carry uncured resin on their surfaces and inside recesses. Washing removes that residue so the part can dry and cure evenly. With the HeyGears workflow, the wash job can be set on UltraCraft Wash or sent from Blueprint Studio where supported. Use the cleaning liquid, speed, and time specified for the exact resin.

A two-stage wash is useful for many alcohol-washed materials: a rough wash removes most surface resin, and a fine wash with cleaner liquid finishes the details. Do not assume that the same timing applies to every resin, and do not leave a print soaking indefinitely—overwashing can affect surface quality and material performance.

Place parts so they do not pile against one another or rub delicate surfaces. After washing, check deep folds, the underside of the base, armor recesses, and the support forest. A shiny or sticky patch can indicate remaining resin. Rewash only as the material instructions permit.

8. Dry Completely, Then Remove Supports

Drying is a real step, not a pause between washing and curing. Let the miniature air-dry in a clean area or use clean compressed air as recommended. The surface should look uniformly matte and should not smell strongly of wash liquid. Curing a wet model can create cloudy patches, residue, or an uneven finish.

For many miniatures, removing supports after washing and before the final cure makes cleanup easier because the resin has not reached its final hardness. Use flush cutters on critical contacts rather than twisting delicate weapons or fingers. Support the part close to the contact point and work from the outer branches toward the model.

Some materials or geometries call for a different sequence, so follow the resin’s application guide. If a contact leaves a small nub, trim it carefully and sand only after the part has been properly cured. Never sand uncured resin.

9. Cure With the Correct Material Profile

Post-curing completes the material reaction and helps the print reach its intended properties. Place the fully dry, support-free model in UltraCraft Cure with enough space for light to reach it. Select or send the curing task recommended for your resin. The correct process may control more than time; depending on the material, it can also involve temperature and a staged program.

A longer cure is not automatically a better cure. Excessive exposure can make some miniature resins brittle or change their color, while insufficient curing can leave the surface soft or tacky. The safest rule is simple: use the current official material profile, especially when Blueprint Studio and UltraCraft Cure can pass the prepared task through the same workflow.

10. Inspect, Finish, and Prime

After curing, let the miniature return to room temperature if the profile used heat. Inspect it under a raking light. Look for glossy residue, support nubs, tiny pits, layer shifts, and areas where supports obscured detail. A successful first print does not need to be perfect; it should be complete, dimensionally stable, clean, fully cured, and detailed enough to paint.

Trim or sand remaining support marks with suitable protection, remove dust, and apply a thin primer coat. Heavy primer can hide the very facial features, armor edges, cloth textures, and engraved details that resin printing reproduces so well. Several light passes are safer than one wet coat.

A Quick First-Print Checklist

  1. Ventilate the space and put on nitrile gloves and eye protection.
  2. Inspect and secure the RS Turbo platform and resin tank.
  3. Choose one compact, forgiving miniature.
  4. Select the exact printer, resin, tank, and profile in Blueprint Studio.
  5. Repair, orient, support, preview, slice, and send the model.
  6. Mix and load resin without exceeding the fill limits.
  7. Print, drain, and inspect before removing the platform.

  • Touching uncured resin with bare skin: gloves are required even for a “quick” adjustment.
  • Using a random exposure profile: start with the validated printer-and-resin combination.
  • Skipping the layer preview: auto-supports help, but a human review can still catch islands and vulnerable details.
  • Overfilling the vat: leave room for the platform and resin displacement.
  • Curing before the model is dry: trapped wash liquid can spoil the surface.
  • Using one universal wash or cure time: post-processing is resin-specific.
  • Starting with a full plate: one miniature makes learning faster and failures cheaper.

The real success of a first resin print is not only the miniature in your hand. It is the workflow you can repeat: a protected bench, the right file preparation, a clean RS Turbo setup, a controlled print, a material-matched wash, complete drying, careful support removal, and a validated cure.
